  • Combination of measurements of the top-quark pair production cross section from the Tevatron Collider
  • 2014
  • In: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 89:7
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We combine six measurements of the inclusive top-quark pair (t(sic)) production cross section (sigma(t)(sic)) from data collected with the CDF and D0 detectors at the Fermilab Tevatron with proton-antiproton collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of up to 8.8 fb(-1). We obtain a value of sigma tt = 7.60 +/- 0.41 pb for a top-quark mass of m(t) = 172.5 GeV. The contributions to the uncertainty are 0.20 pb from statistical sources, 0.29 pb from systematic sources, and 0.21 pb from the uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The result is in good agreement with the standard model expectation of 7.35(-0.33)(+0.28) pb at next-to-next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to leading logarithms in perturbative QCD.

  • Observation of s-Channel Production of Single Top Quarks at the Tevatron
  • 2014
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 112:23
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report the first observation of single-top-quark production in the s channel through the combination of the CDF and D0 measurements of the cross section in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data correspond to total integrated luminosities of up to 9.7 fb(-1) per experiment. The measured cross section is sigma(s) = 1.29(-0.24)(+0.26) pb. The probability of observing a statistical fluctuation of the background to a cross section of the observed size or larger is 1.8 x 10(-10), corresponding to a significance of 6.3 standard deviations for the presence of an s-channel contribution to the production of single-top quarks.

  • Constraints on Models for the Higgs Boson with Exotic Spin and Parity in VH -> Vb(b)over-bar Final States
  • 2014
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 113:16, s. 161802-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present constraints on models containing non-standard-model values for the spin J and parity P of the Higgs boson H in up to 9.7 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. These are the first studies of Higgs boson J(P) with fermions in the final state. In the ZH -> llb (b) over bar, WH -> l nu b (b) over barb, and ZH -> nu nu b (b) over bar final states, we compare the standard model (SM) Higgs boson prediction, J(P) = 0(+), with two alternative hypotheses, J(P) = 0(-) and J(P) = 2(+). We use a likelihood ratio to quantify the degree to which our data are incompatible with non-SM J(P) predictions for a range of possible production rates. Assuming that the production rate in the signal models considered is equal to the SM prediction, we reject the J(P) = 0(-) and J(P) = 2(+) hypotheses at the 97.6% CL and at the 99.0% CL, respectively. The expected exclusion sensitivity for a J(P) = 0(-)(J(P) = 2(+)) state is at the 99.86% (99.94%) CL. Under the hypothesis that our data are the result of a combination of the SM-like Higgs boson and either a J(P) = 0(-) or a J(P) = 2(+) signal, we exclude a J(P) = 0(-) fraction above 0.80 and a JP = 2(+) fraction above 0.67 at the 95% CL. The expected exclusion covers J(P) = 0(-)(J(P) = 2(+)) fractions above 0.54 (0.47).

  • 2014
  • In: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 89:7, s. 072006-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We determine the fraction of events with double parton (DP) Scattering in a single p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV in gamma + 3 jet and gamma + b/c jet + 2 jet events collected with the D0 detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 8.7 fb(-1). The DP fractions and effective cross sections (sigma(eff)) are measured for both event samples using the same kinematic selections. The measured DP fractions range from 0.21 to 0.17, with effective cross sections in the gamma + 3 jet and gamma + b/cjet + 2 jet samples of sigma(incl)(eff) = 12.7 +/- 0.2(stat) +/- 1.3(syst) mb and sigma(HF)(eff) = 14.6 +/- 0.6(stat) +/- 3.2(syst) mb, respectively.

  • 2014
  • In: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 750, s. 78-95
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The electron and photon reconstruction and identification algorithms used by the DO Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider are described. The determination of the electron energy scale and resolution is presented. Studies of the performance of the electron and photon reconstruction and identification are summarized. The results are based on measurements of Z boson decay events of Z ee and Z gamma ll(i=e mu) collected in pp(over bar) collisions at a center- of- mass energy of 1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of up to10 fb(-1.)

  • Improved b quark jet identification at the D0 experiment
  • 2014
  • In: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 763, s. 290-303
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The ability to identify jets which originated from b quarks is an important tool of the physics program of the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar collider. This paper describes a new algorithm designed to select jets originating from b quarks while suppressing the contamination caused by jets from other quark flavors and gluons. Additionally, a new technique, the SystemN method, for determining the misidentification rate directly from data is presented. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Measurement of Associated Production of Z Bosons with Charm Quark Jets in p(p)over-bar Collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV
  • 2014
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 112:4, s. 042001-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present the first measurements of the ratios of cross sections sigma(p (p) over bar -> Z + c jet)/sigma(p (p) over bar -> Z + jet) and sigma(p (p) over bar -> Z + jet)/sigma(p (p) over bar -> Z + b jet) for the associated production of a Z boson with at least one charm or bottom quark jet. Jets have transverse momentum p(T)(jet) > 20 GeV and pseudorapidity vertical bar eta(jet)vertical bar < 2.5. These cross section ratios are measured differentially as a function of jet and Z boson transverse momenta, based on 9.7 fb(-1) of p<(p)over bar> collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. The measurements show significant deviations from perturbative QCD calculations and predictions from various event generators.

  • Measurement of differential tt production cross sections in pp collisions
  • 2014
  • In: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 90:9, s. 092006-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The production of top quark-antiquark pair events in pp collisions at root s= 1.96 TeV is studied as a function of the transverse momentum and absolute value of the rapidity of the top quarks as well as of the invariant mass of the tt pair. We select events containing an isolated lepton, a large imbalance in transverse momentum, and four or more jets with at least one jet identified as originating from a b quark. The data sample corresponds to 9.7 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Observed differential cross sections are consistent with standard model predictions.

  • Measurement of the differential gamma+2b-jet cross section and the ration sigma(gamma+2b-jets)/sigma(gamma plus b-jet) in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV
  • 2014
  • In: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 737, s. 357-365
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present the first measurements of the differential cross section d sigma/dp(T)(gamma) for the production of an isolated photon in association with at least two b-quark jets. The measurements consider photons with rapidities vertical bar y(gamma)vertical bar < 1.0 and transverse momenta 30 < p(T)(gamma) < 200 GeV. The b-quark jets are required to have p(T)(jet) > 15 GeVand vertical bar y(jet)vertical bar < 1.5. The ratio of differential production cross sections for gamma + 2 b-jets to gamma + b-jet as a function of p(T)(gamma) is also presented. The results are based on the proton-antiproton collision data at root s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measured cross sections and their ratios are compared to the next- to- leading order perturbative QCD calculations as well as predictions based on the k(T)- factorization approach and those from the sherpa and pythia Monte Carlo event generators.

  • Measurement of the Direct CP-violating Charge Asymmetry in D-s(+/-) -> Phi pi(+/-) Decays
  • 2014
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 112:11, s. 111804-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present a measurement of the direct CP-violating charge asymmetry in D-s(+) -> phi pi(+/-) decays where the phi meson decays to K+ K-, using the full Run II data set with an integrated luminosity of 10.4 fb(-1) of proton- antiproton collisions collected using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The normalized difference A(CP) in the yield of D-s(+) and D-s(-) mesons in these decays is measured by fitting the difference between their reconstructed invariant mass distributions. This results in an asymmetry of A(CP) = [-0.38 +/- 0.27]%, which is the most precise measurement of this quantity to date. The result is consistent with the standard model prediction of zero CP asymmetry in this decay.
